Photo Collage Ideas

I have four different location ideas for my photo collage.
  1. Looking out from Wescoe Beach at the students and cars that go by.

2. Jaybowl (including cosmic bowling)

3. Snow melting in my backyard

4. The Train Depot and the graffiti on the trains

Hallmark- Matt George

I went to Hallmark Symposium on Thursday and really enjoyed Angelia and Matt's presentation. One thing that stuck out in my mind was Matt's work with Scion. The graphics he made had a graffiti feel, which is something that I am passionate about. Also after looking at his site, I realized that he made tshirt designs to go along with a commercial. Just seeing how one idea and one graphic can turn into several different media platform and products. Here are some of his designs.

Lynch Reading

Lynch- The Image of the City

5 elements of Wayfinding
1.     Paths
2.     Edges
3.     Districts
4.     Nodes
5.     Landmarks

Boston Travelers-
·        Visitors- viewed the city as different distinct regions when traveling
·        Residents- used landmarks to get through the city

Other methods of Wayfinding
-look for wide streets where larger building tend to be on ( with the exception of Washington)
-levees and rivers can be used as paths or boundaries.
-change in the use of buildings (ex. business to residential)

Gradient- a regular or steady change in some quality which is cumulative in one direction.

Scaling- Using landmarks to determine your location on a path.

Problems with Wayfinding- When streets seemed to be perpendicular put were actually curved, distorting the travelers perception.

Wayfinding ideas

So after finding all our problems with the parking lot, the we decided how we were going to fix it. Here are some pictures of us in the process of making our mock up signs and ideas.

We decided to use flags to help guide general directions and to "paint" the stripes of the lot according to the coordinating color. After having some issues with the cold weather and the tape not sticking we had to improvise and make planks out of cardboard and boxes to hold our flags up. We also mocked up a sign for near the entrance of the lot.

Photography

So I finally got my camera for photography class last weekend and here are some of my first pictures I took using it. I already love it and can't wait to take more.
My cat doesn't like the snow very much, but she hates being inside all the time. I decided taking pictures of her wanting to come back in could be really interesting. I changed the exposure on both of these because of the brightness of the snow.

This is a mask that i got in New Orleans. I really like how the feathers closer up are more in focus then the ones behind, while keeping the bright colors throughout.
This is a sign at my grandparents house. They sell vegetables in the summer and all they have left is sweet potatoes. The recent snow covered the bottom half, but I thought it was kind of ironic that it just said sweet.
Im not sure why but my grandma put christmas ornaments in this class container. I liked the colors, so I took a picture.
Her dog was afraid of me and the camera and just wanted to cuddle with her.
I love this broach. The detail on this picture is really great.
These plants look so errie but by adding snow it gives them a completely different feel.

BDS 102- Wayfinding

Our first project was to pick a location on campus that needed some improvement in directions and signage. Our group agreed upon revising the parking lot system KU had in place. 3 out of the 5 people in our group had experience with trying to navigate through the parking lots and all of us found it difficult to find somewhere to park according to our color pass. Some of the problems we ran into were:

  • no indication where the parking lots were located.
  • signs were small
  • signs were one sided forcing you to drive all the way up to them to read.
  • colors were not clearly marked
  • system was boring
