Lynch Reading

Lynch- The Image of the City

5 elements of Wayfinding
1.     Paths
2.     Edges
3.     Districts
4.     Nodes
5.     Landmarks

Boston Travelers-
·        Visitors- viewed the city as different distinct regions when traveling
·        Residents- used landmarks to get through the city

Other methods of Wayfinding
-look for wide streets where larger building tend to be on ( with the exception of Washington)
-levees and rivers can be used as paths or boundaries.
-change in the use of buildings (ex. business to residential)

Gradient- a regular or steady change in some quality which is cumulative in one direction.

Scaling- Using landmarks to determine your location on a path.

Problems with Wayfinding- When streets seemed to be perpendicular put were actually curved, distorting the travelers perception.
