Project Reflection

Looking back on the project, I wish I had been more creative. I took the easy way out on a lot of the designs in order to save time. For the compositions, I was fairly happy with my final five, but I wish I would have come up with more ideas that I liked as well as those five.

The letter models worked out great with our definition. The fact that they are

boxes and can be stacked on top of each other really pushed the first definition of support. The color choice helped with the second part of our definition. I wish we would have done many more locations, but I think that the pictures we do have turned out really great.

The photo book was my favorite part of the project. I loved the freedom to create it however we wanted. I really like my photo book and am pretty proud of it. The pop-up support box in the middle of my photo book was completely created by accident, but I think it added a lot to the concept of the book.

Overall this is my favorite project so far.

Photo Book

These were my preliminary models of my photobook, the final idea, an accordian fold, and a flag book.

These are the layout I designed to print in order to make the book.

And this is the final product. It has different meanings on either side, the middle bottom is a pop-up box that supports itself, and the middle top has pictures of our process of building the letters.

Reflection of Photography Essay

There are 8 different techniques in the Photo-Op essay that help improve your photograph.

Asymmetry and symmetry
Both of these are very effective. Symmetry is easy on the eye and makes a good composition, but asymmetry makes the viewer think.

Repetition
This makes the viewer question, “why is this here and how?” It draws attention and emphasis.

Framing
This is a way to draw attention to the main focus. It is most effectively done in a subtle manner, that does not distract from the focal point.

Close-up
This shows the complexity and detail of an object. By taking a close-up, you can see the beauty of the object in a deeper sense and not just the broader picture.

Continuous Mode
Taking a series of pictures, possibly in a circle; having fun with your camera.

Exploration
Take over 100 pictures of the same object from different angles and lighting.

Movement
By shaking a moving your camera, you can add a whole new feel to the image.

Serendipity
Have your camera with you at all times in case fate gives you a fantastic photo opportunity.

Process of Building our Word

Site Locations for Cardboard Word

Because we had two meaning for our word, we wanted to make sure we captured both of these meaning throughout our pictures. Here are some of our location ideas that could be either definition.

Definition of Support

Support:
1. To bear the weight of, especially from below.

2. To hold in position so as to keep from falling, sinking, or slipping

3.To maintain (a person, family, establishment, institution, etc.) by supplying with things necessary to existence; provide for:

Conquer Compositions

After creating 20 handconstructed composition to define our word only using the letters in our word, we had to make Adobe Illustrator compositions and matte our final five. These were my favorite ones:

A "C" with teeth using "u's" and "n's" and the letters "onquer" are inside the belly of the "C".

All the little "conquers" are being conquered by the one big "conquer".
The Q is conquering the rest of the word.
This one represents a chess board. The Q is the queen with the other letters being the pieces around it.

The letters CONQ are conquering and smashing the letters UER.

Parts of a Letter

After reading “Parts of the Letter” , I really had a better understanding of what typography actually includes. I learned many new terms including apex, crossbar, vertex, final, terminal, bowl, counter, and many more. I never realized how structured lettering can be. It all needs to be lined up, but there is room for different pieces of the letter to venture out from the box it’s contained in. I particularly found the letter “G” very interesting. The term spur is something I had never heard of in reference to letters, but without that line, The “G” would not look like the letter “G”. That just refers to the uppercase “G”. The lowercase “g” has a whole new set of terms, the ear, link, and loop. The ear of the “g” actually does look like an ear. The link is the curve that connects the top circle to the loop below.

Project 1 part 1

We were first told to create twenty compositions of our word we chose. My word was conquer. By cutting, glueing, and drawing, we were supposed to define our word by only using the letters of our word.

Review of Project 2

Even though I like the way our frame turned out, if I were to do this project over again, I would most likely pick a different object to recreate. Something people use on a daily basis. I feel like our product was not as innovative as it could have been, but by the time we realized we should have picked a different object, it was far too late to change. But we had to keep going, and I think that we really transformed our picture frame to something a lot more exciting and more functional. Before it was impossible to actually put your jewelry in the box and to hold a picture. By adding hooks, a bar, and a cushion, this allows for it to hang on the way and still hold your jewelry. While doing that it also creates a picture frame to hold your favorite memory.
